A Bensonhurst mother got an unexpected birthday gift this year when she learned that an arrest had been made in the 2013 slaying of her son in East Harlem.
Yvette Cajigas described the arrest of Edwin Burgos, 56, as "a sign and a gift."
"I said, please, I need a sign to know that you're going to be with me on my birthday," Cajigas says. "And that was the perfect sign."
Prosecutors in Manhattan charged Burgos with attempted murder and criminal possession of a weapon for allegedly shooting Luciano Cajigas after a dispute.
Cajigas, an aspiring rapper and father of a son of his own, was shot and killed in June 2013. His friends say he'd gotten into an argument with a man who knew his girlfriend.
According to Yvette Cajigas, her son and grandson were very close, but she hasn't seen the latter in quite some time.
"That's the only thing that my son left me," she says. "A part of my son is somewhere, and I don't know where he is."
Burgos is due back in court on Friday.
