Albanians celebrate Mother Theresa statue in Bensonhurst
Members of the Albanian community in Bensonhurst celebrated the unveiling of a statue of the newly sainted Mother Theresa on Sunday.
The unveiling took place at St. Athanasius Church on Bay Parkway.
Mother Theresa was from Albania and holds a special place in their hearts, so organizers say it was only natural that the president of the Republic of Albania, Bujar Nishani, attend the event. Nishani was in town for the U.N. General Assembly and made a stop at the official unveiling of her statue.
The statue, which was made in Italy, was blessed by the pastor of St. Athanasius Church, Msgr. David Cassato.
State Sen. Marty Golden also attended the event. Golden spearheaded a campaign to make Sept. 4, 2016, Mother Theresa Day in New York.
