The Interfaith Medical Center is getting the Brooklyn community to provide support during National Sickle Cell Awareness Month.

The center held an event Wednesday to share information about sickle cell anemia and help educate people.

Sickle cell anemia is a disorder in which there aren't enough healthy red blood cells to carry an adequate amount of oxygen throughout the body.

Sisters Imani and Quaneisha Carty, who both have sickle cell anemia and have been coming to Interfaith Medical Center since they were born, say they're grateful for events like Wednesday's.

"We need to have a lot more events like this so that more people can know, so we can have a lot more support," Quaneisha Carty says. "It's really difficult for the parents, for family members to go on and who can't do anything about it. It's a journey."
