Advocates push registrations on Organ Donor Enrollment Day
Thursday marked National Organ Donor Enrollment Day, and health advocates in the borough did what they could to get more donors registered.
NYU Lutheran Medical Center in Sunset Park brought awareness to the issue through its second annual enrollment day.
The day was important in New York City because the number of registered donors across the five boroughs is dangerously low.
Health advocates say there are about 120,000 people across the state awaiting an organ. The Bronx ranks fourth out of the five boroughs in terms of eligible residents who are enrolled as donors.
Experts say becoming an organ donor can save eight lives, and that number can increase to 50 with a tissue donation.
