FDNY: Child dies, 6 injured in apartment blaze in Brownsville

A fire in Brownsville's Howard Houses killed a 1-year-old boy and injured six more people Wednesday morning, according to officials.

It sparked in a 13th-floor apartment on Mother Gaston Boulevard around 8:30 a.m., the FDNY says.

Two victims are in critical condition.

Firefighters had to force their way into the apartment when they arrived, officials say. They found seven people inside, including the toddler, Ivan Baez, who was pronounced dead at Brookdale Hospital.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
