Day care center evicted before morning drop-off
Several parents planning to drop off their kids at their Bed-Stuy day care center Wednesday morning found a closed gate and locked doors instead.
News 12 Brooklyn has learned that the day care center's owners were evicted just hours earlier.
Gary and Susan Sampson, who own New Life in Christ Day Care on Marcy Avenue, say they were kicked out illegally. They say they signed a 99-year lease in 2013.
"It was a total surprise," the couple says. Parents say the same thing.
But the landlord and the City Marshals say the Sampsons had known since a 2015 trial that they had to address legal problems with the lease or face eviction.
Marshals say they were required by law to abort prior in-person eviction attempts because children were present in the day care center. So a court issued an order for the eviction at 5 a.m. Wednesday, before any children arrived.
But while the Sampsons and their landlord tangle with legal issues, the children and their parents are left without a day care center.
