The city has unveiled a proposal to make a dangerous intersection in Bay Ridge safer for both drivers and pedestrians, but not everyone in the community is on board with the plan.Community Board 10 listed the intersection of 86th Street and 4th Avenue as a top high-crash corridor. In response, the Department of Transportation says it wants to improve safety conditions by reducing speeding and improving pedestrian crosswalks.The city is considering cutting the number of travel lanes in each direction between Shore Road and 4th Avenue, ban left turns from 4th Avenue West onto 86th Street and put in more bike lanes along with medians in the middle of the road.While some local residents support the proposed changes, others say they will hurt businesses in the bustling shopping district. Several public hearings on the proposals will be held in the early spring. Then, Community Board 10 will vote on whether or not to support the city's plan. If it is approved, changes in the area could be seen as soon as this summer.
