Assemblyman Lopez quits Dem party post amid harassment case
Assemblyman Vito Lopez has announced his resignation as head of Brooklyn's Democratic Party.
His resignation comes in the wake of an ethics committee investigation that found he sexually harassed two of his staffers.
Lopez maintains his innocence, and said that while he is stepping down from his post as chairman, he is not resigning from the assembly.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D-New York) says he wants the harassment case to go all the way up to the state ethics board, and if sexual harassment is proven, Lopez should resign from the assembly.
Lopez told News 12 Brooklyn that he has his own reasons for stepping down.
"The onslaught of character attacks has put enormous pressures on my family and close friends," he said. "I cannot sit by and allow that to continue."
