Young boy killed, 7 others injured in Decatur St. fire

Officials are investigating an early morning fire today that left a young boy dead and seven others injured in Bushwick.

Officials identified the victim as 7-year-old Joel Smith.

Firefighters say the fire started before 1 a.m. at a three-story home on Decatur Avenue.

The fire broke out on the first floor and quickly spread upwards, according to investigators.

Fire officials say all the injured victims were taken to nearby hospitals and that one victim was in critical condition.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
