Teen killed in Brighton Beach fire hailed as hero
Neighbors say the young man who died in a house fire in Brighton Beach yesterday acted heroically by helping save others in the building before succumbing to the smoke.
EMS crews say 18-year-old Jhordan Caballero was found dead at the scene of the fire which tore through all four apartments in a multi-family home at 2847 Brighton 3rd St.
Another woman who lives on the first floor was taken to Coney Island Hospital, but is expected to recover.
Neighbor Nikita Ababiy says Caballero, who was a college student, used to help local kids with their homework. Ababiy says the 18-year-old was like a brother to him.
"He did a lot of good stuff," Ababiy says. "I hope everybody will remember him."
The owner of the burnt-out building says it will be more than a year before anyone can move back in.
