State Senate passes bill allowing after-hours worship in schools

The state Senate has passed a bill that would allow worship services in public schools after hours.

The move could reverse a Department of Education (DOE) policy that has evicted churches throughout the city from public schools or community centers that rent space.

DOE officials and Mayor Michael Bloomberg have argued that after school services blur the line between the division of church and state.

The legislation now needs approval in the state Assembly.
