Wounded officer expected to recover; suspect arrested
A suspect has been arrested in last night's shooting of a police officer in Bushwick.
According to the NYPD, 29-year-old Kevin Brennan was shot in the head while on duty last night. Brennan is expected to make a full recovery after having a bullet removed from his skull.
Officials say he was hit while on duty and in plainclothes at around 9 p.m. at 370 Bushwick Ave.
Commissioner Ray Kelly says that Brennan and two other plainclothes anti-crime officers were responding to a report of shots fired when they encountered three individuals running from a building. He says the officers chased the suspects, but one of them turned and fired at Brennan.
Authorities arrested the suspected shooter, 21-year-old Luis Ortiz, about two hours later inside an apartment building close to the scene.
Ortiz is expected to be charged with attempted murder of a police officer and is also under investigation in connection with a murder on New Year's Eve, according to officials.
