Greenpoint residents fume over proposed waste treatment plant
Greenpoint residents are outraged at the possibility that a waste treatment plant will be coming to their neighborhood, despite reassurances from the city that the facility will be using clean technologies.
Earlier this month, the Department of Sanitation released a list of nine possible new waste management sites, including one at Varick Avenue and Lombardy Street, not far from a Little League ball field.
Officials say if a new waste treatment facility opens anywhere, it will have to be cleaner than typical sites and will not run a traditional incinerator.
However, Greenpoint residents say their neighborhood is handling enough of the city's waste already.
