Parents call for bed bug extermination at P.S. 224
A group of angry East New York parents are calling on education officials to take immediate action after bed bugs were found in the building.
Councilman Charles Barron (D-Brooklyn) joined a couple dozen protesters at P.S. 224 this morning, where they say school administrators discovered bed bugs in four classrooms. They claim those students were sent home with letters, but that the rest of the school was not notified.
The Department of Education (DOE) released a statement saying, "There was no infestation. A single bed bug was confirmed in one classroom in February and the room was inspected. On April 14, a single bed bug was found in one classroom and another bed bug was confirmed in another classroom. Every time we find a single bed bug we are required to report it. Schools are not hospitable environments for bed bugs and are brought in from the outside, usually in a bag or on clothing."
