MTA: Subway crime is on the rise

The heads of the NYPD and the Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) are planning a meeting to discuss a spike in crime on the city's subways.Data shows that most major crimes are on the rise at subway stations across the five boroughs. Robberies rose about 32 percent in the first three months of this year, compared with 2011. Grand larcenies were up nearly 24 percent for the same period. MTA officials say that campaigns to promote awareness among riders have done little to curb crime. MTA Chairman Joseph Lhota and NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly say they will discuss what can be done to turn the tide on the troubling statistics.
