Final school day arrives for thousands of BK students
It's the final day of school before summer break for thousands of Brooklyn students, but for many it is bittersweet.
The Department of Education (DOE) is phasing out seven public schools in the borough due to poor performance. Officials say that after the youngest class graduates, the doors will close for good, which may take between two and five years.
The schools include P.S. 19 Roberto Clemente Elementary School, General D. Chappie James Elementary School of Science and International Arts Business School. Satellite Three Middle School, Middle School for the Arts, J.H.S. 296 The Anna Gonzalez Community School and P.S. 22 are also starting the phase-out process.
Although the schools are closing, it wasn't without a fight. Parents, students and local leaders spent months challenging the DOE at hearings and holding protests.
