A Brooklyn assemblyman wants to install speed cameras along McGuinness Boulevard in order to get drivers to be more careful on a street that has seen multiple traffic deaths.
According to Assemblyman Joe Lentol (D-Greenpoint), speed cameras would reduce the number and severity of crashes and improve driving practices. He has introduced legislation asking the city to install the cameras and fine drivers caught speeding.
The Department of Transportation says it will not comment on any legislation until it comes to a hearing. The DOT says speed is a factor in about 25 percent of traffic fatalities in the city.
