Cleanup efforts are wrapping up after more than 1,000 gallons of oil and gas leaked into the Paerdegat Basin.City crews remain out on the water, advising people that boats will be washed in the next couple of days after a pipe mishap caused the oily liquid to flow into the waterway. The leak also led to a foul odor throughout the Canarsie neighborhood. The U.S. Coast Guard was called in to lead the cleanup and says much of the work is complete, and that National Grid will now take over. The Department of Health says it will be testing water and soil samples, and possibly the marine life, to see if any long-term fishing advisories need to be issued.
