6-year-old stabbed in elevator remembered 1 year later
One year ago Monday, 6-year-old Prince Joshua "PJ" Avitto was stabbed to death in an elevator at an apartment housing unit in East New York.
According to police, Avitto and his friend Mikayla Capers were riding the elevator of the Boulevard Houses when a man walked in and stabbed both children multiple times with a steak knife.
Avitto died as a result of the attack, police say. Capers was seriously injured but has since recovered.
The suspect was later identified as Daniel St. Hubert. He pleaded not guilty to the stabbing and is awaiting trial.
Friends and family marked one year since the attack with a candlelight vigil where they sang and said prayers honoring the two children.
Avitto's mother is now seeking damages from the city, claiming that a lack of security in the NYCHA building led to his death.
Avitto would have turned 8 this month.
