Flag-burning rally held in Fort Greene Park
A flag-burning rally was held Wednesday at Fort Greene Park.
It was organized by a group called "Disarm NYPD," which says it believes the American flag represents the country's long history of oppression.
The group says it gathered at the site of the Prison Ship Martyrs' Monument to burn both the American and Confederate flags to send a message that racism is alive and well.
Earlier, state Sen. Martin Golden called on Mayor Bill de Blasio and other city officials to prevent the rally.
"If the city allows the American flag to be burned, contrary to parks rules, it will truly insult all those who have fought to defend our freedom," he says.
Residents who spoke with News 12 say the American flag is a symbol of pride and freedom. Others say the recent shooting at a South Carolina church and instances of police brutality stand in the face of any pride they felt toward the country.
