Food for Thought: Savory summer snacks
With summer vacation underway, News 12's Natasha Geigel set out to help parents get some fresh ideas for savory snacks.
She caught up with Steve Lender, chef and CEO of zoneManhattan.com. He offered some healthy and natural snack ideas.
Linder says zoneManhattan.com tries to come up with new spins on traditional items. One such idea is sweet pea hummus, which is similar to traditional hummus but it's fortified with sweet peas, which reduces the calories.
Another great snack idea that comes in its own natural packaging is edamame. The soybean pods can be purchased frozen from the grocery store, and then microwaved for 30 seconds for a quick and tasty snack.
Another snack idea is a play on the traditional tamale, made from chickpeas and olive oil instead of corn and lard. With avocado and pumpkin seeds, it offers a unique blend of textures and flavors.
