The family of the Staten Island man who died after he was infamously placed in an apparent chokehold by an NYPD officer last year is marking the one year anniversary of his death by remembering his life.

Eric Garner's family gathered in his native Gowanus to keep his memory alive. Friends, family and other mourners joined in prayer in the neighborhood.

His daughter, Emerald Garner, reminisced over some of the landmarks she remembered from her childhood.

News 12 reported earlier this week that the Garner family reached a multimillion-dollar settlement with the NYPD over his death. The younger Garner said that while the settlement money won't bring her father back, she's using her story and time to give guidance to a youth group run by the National Action Network.

A grand jury decided not to indict NYPD Officer Daniel Pantaleo, who was shown on cellphone video administering the apparent chokehold, but the Garner family and their supporters are still pushing for federal charges against all of the police officers involved in the death.
