Cuomo aide Carey Gabay dies after shooting
An aide to Gov. Andrew Cuomo who was shot in the head on Labor Day died Wednesday, according to a family spokesman.
Carey Gabay, 43, was caught in the crossfire between rival gangs in the early morning festivities before the West Indian American Day Parade in Brooklyn. Police say the stray bullet struck Gabay along Eastern Parkway.
"There are difficult decisions we will face in the coming hours and days as our family struggles to process what this means for us," Gabay's family said in a statement. "Our family is grieving that a man in the prime of his life who has impacted so many lives could be struck down by such a callous act."
The family offered their thanks for the outpouring of support they have received from strangers touched by Gabay's legacy.
Cuomo also released a statement asking that all New Yorkers keep Gabay and his family in their thoughts and prayers.
Gabay worked as the first deputy counsel to Cuomo after receiving an undergraduate and law degree from Harvard University. He grew up in public housing in the Bronx.
Police are still searching for the suspects in the shooting.
