MTA considering Verrazano Bridge bike path
The MTA is considering adding a bike path on the Verrazano Bridge.
Advocates with the group Transportation Alternatives rallied in support of the project this weekend. Bicyclists have been asking for such a project for years.
Nothing has been officially announced, but the MTA has hired an engineering firm and launched a $2.5 million study to see if a bike path would be feasible.
Currently, runners and bikers can only cross the bridge during the New York City Marathon and the Five Boro Bike Tour.
Advocates say adding the bike lane could cost as much as $400 million to install, which has some critics questioning whether the MTA should commit that much money to such a project.
