Groups give gifts to inmates’ children
Hundreds of children in Bedford-Stuyvesant received some very special gifts Saturday.
All of the 250 children who received two free gifts during the event have at least one parent who is in jail, or had previously been incarcerated.
The event was sponsored by the organizations Toy Industry Foundation and Children of Promise.
Organizers say the event is to show children that they are surrounded by a supportive community.
"Many of them haven't seen their parents in a really long time, so it gives them something to look forward to and it gives them hope and joy," said Elizabeth Max, of the Toy Industry Foundation.
