Logan St. fire probe turns to homicide investigation
A fire investigation from a week ago is now a homicide investigation, and police say they have identified a suspect.
First responders say they found 61-year-old Romulo Heras dead inside an apartment on Logan Street last Friday. Having found a wound to the neck, police now say it was not the fire that killed him.
Police have identified the suspect as 17-year-old Jahkeem Scott. Scott is seen in surveillance photos at the entrance of the apartment building and next to a squad car that patrolled the area.
Residents of the area believe the person responsible knew what they were doing and didn't care that there were surveillance cameras.
As news of a possible suspect surfaced, family and friends filled the Ponce Funeral Home to remember the man described as kind, hard-working and a loving father. His family says his wish was to be buried in his native Ecuador and they plan on honoring what he wanted.
Heras' partner and daughter not only have to deal with the loss of their loved one, but they also must now find a place to live.
