Former Syracuse star Pearl Washington honored at memorial

The New York basketball community came out to honor the life of homegrown star Dwayne "Pearl" Washington Thursday.
Washington, who was born in the Bronx and attended Syracuse University before playing with the NBA's New Jersey Nets, died last Wednesday.
He earned the nickname "Pearl" playing street ball in Brownsville.
Mourners gathered for a memorial service Thursday.
Many of them remembered Washington as humble, selfless and a great athlete.
Attendees included Boys and Girls High School teammate Elmer Anderson, legendary former St. John's basketball coach Lou Carnesecca and more.
Washington's funeral will be held Friday.
