Parishioners at the Saints Peter and Paul Church in Williamsburg breathed a sigh of relief Sunday after a stolen statue was returned to their place of worship.
According to the church, the statue of Jesus was found in a trash can by a good Samaritan who saw media reports about it.
The statue had been reported stolen from the front of the rectory late last month. Surveillance video shows what appears to be a woman going inside the gate and taking the statue off the podium.
The statue is now being restored in an art studio in Westchester. In a twist, the statue was already a replacement; the church's first statue had been stolen back in 2012.
Members of the congregation say they hope that the person behind the latest theft is brought to justice.
