Brownsville man accused of beating women, child in elevator
A man was arrested and charged after allegedly beating two women and striking a child inside of an elevator at the Van Dyke Houses Tuesday.
Resident Rashea Glenn says she was inside the elevator with her 8-year-old son Roman when William Battle entered on the sixth floor. She says Battle then started beating up another woman inside the elevator, who managed to get free on the 10th floor.
Glenn says when she tried to intervene, she was punched in the face. She says Battle beat her and her son repeatedly. After exiting the elevator, she called police.
Battle was charged with two counts of assault in the third degree and endangering the welfare of a child among others.
According to the District Attorney's Office, Glenn and her family are upset the attacker, who lives in the building, was released the same day. 
In a statement, the New York City Housing Authority said, "NYCHA is working with the NYPD and the Mayor's Office of Criminal Justice to drive crime down further at Van Dyke Houses, with security upgrades such a lighting and security doors, as well as additional cameras."
