Best of Brooklyn: Canarsie student meets Michelle Obama
A Brooklyn woman is beaming about her brush with fame after getting the chance to meet with first lady Michelle Obama.
It started when 22-year-old Orubba Almansouri delivered this year's salutatory speech at CUNY's commencement. In it, she championed girls' education, wowing her fellow graduates and catching the first lady's eye.
Almansouri's family, now Canarsie residents, emigrated from Yemen when she was 13 years old. Obama shared Almansouri's story via social media and invited her to speak at the United State of Women Summit in Washington, D.C.
Almansouri hopes to use her newfound fame as a platform for girls' education. She plans to enroll at NYU in the fall for a master's program in Middle Eastern studies.
