Police: 7 shot at barbecue, suspect in custody
At least seven people were shot during a Fourth of July barbecue in Ocean Hill.
Police say the incident occurred around 11:30 p.m. Monday on Chauncey Street.
According to police, four men and three women, ranging in age from 17 to 20, were shot. All of them were taken to the hospital and are expected to be OK.
One of the victims, 19-year-old Samuel Weaver Jr., tells News 12 that there were at least 90 people at the barbecue. He says at first, many at the party confused the gunshots with firecrackers.
Police say a man is in custody but has not yet been charged. They believe he was not allowed into the party and opened fire.
Meanwhile, police are looking into whether the shooting was related to another that happened around 9 p.m. on Chauncey and Broadway.
In that incident, a 22-year-old man was shot in the chest. He managed to get to a firehouse for help.
