1 dead, 3 hurt in Williamsburg crash; off-duty officer charged with DWI
One pedestrian was killed and three others were seriously injured when they were struck by a car driven by an off-duty NYPD officer who was allegedly intoxicated.
Police say two men and two women were struck on Bedford Avenue near Eighth Street in Williamsburg around 3 a.m. Saturday.
They say the three injured victims were hospitalized in serious condition.
The driver has been identified as 28-year-old Nicholas Batka. He has been charged with driving while intoxicated, and may face additional charges pending an investigation.
Witnesses say Batka attempted to flee after the crash and threatened an Uber driver who had started recording video at the scene.
News 12 is told Batka works in the Manhattan Transit Task Force and was appointed back in January of last year. He was scheduled for work just hours after the crash.
Batka has since been suspended by the NYPD.
Police have not yet identified the deceased.
