Coney Island beach briefly closes after reported shark sightings
Several calls for possible shark sightings Tuesday morning caused the Coney Island beach to close its waters to beachgoers.
The water was open by late Tuesday afternoon, but it was closed to swimmers at least two separate times throughout the day.
Witnesses saw what appeared to be six, roughly 2-foot-long sharks in the morning, swimming about 50 feet from the shore.
A viewer sent a picture of beachgoers standing on the shore after running from the water just after the call for evacuation around 11:30 a.m.
In a statement, the Parks Department says, "Because sharks have been sighted in certain areas of Coney Island Beach today, Parks has closed specific stretches of the beach and will continue to monitor the situation."
The department adds that if beachgoers see something of concern, they should immediately get out of the water and alert beach personnel.
