Activists march for justice 22 years after teen’s death

Activists joined a slain teen's family members Wednesday to march in memory of his 1994 police-involved death.
Nicholas Heyward Jr., who was 13 at the time of his slaying, was shot and killed by NYPD Officer Brian George, who saw his toy gun.
The victim's father, Nicholas Heyward Sr., led the march to Brooklyn District Attorney Ken Thompson's office. It began at a park named in his son's honor.
George was never charged in the incident, and Heyward has been pushing for his prosecution. The officer has maintained for decades that the shooting was justified, but investigators reopened the case last fall. Due to statutes of limitations, the timeframes for all possible charges other than murder have expired.
Heyward says he had been in monthly contact with prosecutors since the reopening until the DA's office was criticized for recommending no jail time for ex-Officer Peter Liang, who was convicted of fatally shooting Akai Gurley.
