Bed-Stuy church packing groceries for the needy
Congregants at the First Corinthian Baptist Church in Bedford-Stuyvesant are donating groceries to feed the needy this holiday season. Volunteers at the church, which is located at 671 Lafayette Ave., say members were asked to collect 10 non-perishable items. More than 100 bags have been packed with canned goods, cereals and pasta products, and neighbors say the generosity gives them hope. "This is a good idea," says Bedford-Stuyvesant resident Errol Mitchell. "There are a lot of people in need with the economy. There needs to be more of it, but this is a good start." The church performs a similar function on Thanksgiving, providing more than 100 hot meals to those unable to cook for themselves. Those in need can stop by the church this Saturday, Dec. 17, for a bag of groceries.
