A $200 million project conducted by the Department of Environmental Protection is transforming the piles of toxic waste located at Fountain and Pennsylvania avenues into wide open meadows.

The DEP monitors virtually everything on site. Director of Ecological Services for the DEP John McLaughlin explains, ?All new soil is brought in, which goes through rigorous testing for chemical aspects and agricultural aspects. So everything here is very clean.?

Work on the site has been completed since 2007. The DEP will monitor the landfill areas for three to five years. Then the Parks Department will use the collected data to determine when it will be ready for open public access.
