Fare hike begins on LIRR

Brooklyn residents who ride the LIRR saw a 10 percent fare increase go into effect Wednesday.
The fare hike, which the MTA originally announced would be 30-40 percent, was put in place to help shore up the transit agency's budget gap. A bailout from the state Legislature in May allowed the agency to back off the higher fare hikes.
There are three Long Island Rail Road stops in Brooklyn: Flatbush Avenue, Nostrand Avenue and East New York.
