Sharpton: Feds should probe NYPD shooting
Rev. Al Sharpton and local officials rallied Saturday in support of a federal investigation into the shooting death of NYPD officer Omar Edwards.
Edwards reportedly was shot three times Thursday night by fellow NYPD officer Andrew Dunton, of Long Island.
Police say Edwards was off-duty when he chased a suspect he believed broke into his car Thursday night. Dunton reportedly shot Edwards thinking he was the suspect.
Rep. Charles Rangel joined Sharpton in calling for a probe into the killing. Rangel says the fact that Edwards was black may have put him more at risk of being shot than a white officer in the same situation. The officer who shot Edwards is white.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly met with community members Saturday to discuss the incident.
