Brooklyn doctor opens medical center
A Brooklyn cardiologist opened a new health center in East Flatbush Wednesday, hoping to bring the neighborhood more medical care.
Dr. Ernest Afflu privately funded Executive Medical Suites to focus on cardiology in a community he describes as "underserved." Afflu says there are many more heart specialists in Manhattan than Brooklyn.
"Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the U.S. and Brooklyn is underserved," Afflu says. "There are 25 cardiologists per 100,000 people in Manhattan."
The medical center can serve about 100 patients a day with its current staff. Afflu says at least 10 new doctors will join the center in the coming weeks. Afflu says the center will also accept Medicare and Medicaid.
