Mayor unveils green initiatives at navy yard
The first multilevel industrial green building in the nation is opening at the Brooklyn Navy Yard.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg joined with architects and developers Thursday to laud an effort to use wind and solar power at the Perry Avenue building. Officials say wind turbines combine with solar panels to power 10 percent of the building.
The mayor also unveiled lights powered by wind and sunlight at the navy yard, which is undergoing a major expansion.
Plans are in the works for an eco-industrial facility that a photo-imaging company will use to manufacture environmentally friendly products.
Bloomberg says the environmental efforts at the navy yard will lead to more than 1,700 new permanent jobs - 40 percent in green manufacturing.
AP wire services were used in this report.
