Buildings dept. cracks down on faulty elevators
The Department of Buildings is looking to crack down on faulty elevators throughout the city.
Buildings Commissioner Patricia J. Lancaster announced an aggressive new enforcement program to force building managers to practice proper elevator maintenance.
The program includes a plan to publicly shame the worst offenders. According to officials, the worst offenders will be posted on the department's Web site.
The Department of Buildings is also looking at legislation to increase penalties for elevator violations.
Officials are eyeing a penalty of $1,000 for each day an elevator is out of service. The current violations are limited at $800 for the first offense and $2,000 for a second one.
