Elderly man dies in Midwood fire
A Midwood fire caused the death of an elderly man and injured two firefighters Sunday, officials say.
Firefighters arrived at Collier?s Mansion to find the elderly man unresponsive in his fourth floor apartment. Strong flames and clutter made it especially difficult for firefighters to put out the fire, officials say. Once inside, it took firefighters 30 minutes to get the man out of the apartment.
Paramedics tried to revive the man, but he was pronounced dead when paramedics arrived at a nearby hospital with his body.
The building was not evacuated and residents of Collier?s Mansion went on with their activities once fire officials left the scene. Two firefighters suffered minor injuries.
An autopsy will be done to determine the exact cause of death.
