Cops continue to probe fatal shooting of Bed-Stuy teen

Officials are continuing to investigate details surrounding the fatal shooting of a teen by police officers in Bedford-Stuyvesant.

Police said they believed 18-year-old Khiel Coppin was carrying a gun, but it later turned out to be a hairbrush. According to police, the teen's mother called 911 around 7 p.m. about her son. Officials said they could hear screaming in the background and that the mother said her son had a gun.

When they arrived at the scene, police said the teen was inside the home screaming at his mother from a first-floor window before he climbed outside.

Police said they told Coppin to stop and noticed he was carrying a black object. They said the teen proceeded to keep moving, forcing them to shoot. Coppin was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Investigators later determined Coppin was holding a hairbrush.

At a news conference Tuesday, New York City Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said the officers acted within department guidelines when they fired the shots. During the conference, Kelly played 911 tapes, where Coppin could be heard saying he had a gun.

Meanwhile, the community is outraged over the shooting and the teen?s family is now demanding answers and justice. An attorney for the family said Coppin?s mother never told police her son had a gun.
