Tenants above Flatbush store flee from fire

A fire erupted at a Flatbush Avenue 99 cents store Tuesday, causing tenants to flee and giving shoppers a scare.
The fire broke out around 12:30 p.m. near Vanderveer Place and spread to the second floor, where tenants live. Firefighters said although they received reports of two children being trapped, everyone escaped unharmed.
One tenant said her apartment quickly filled with smoke after her husband heard something pop. That tenant, her husband and daughter all made it out safe. The Red Cross is assisting three displaced families.
Fire officials are investigating the cause of the blaze, which also injured six firefighters.
