Red tape holding up Brighton Beach blue mats
Some Brighton Beach patrons are demanding answers from the city Parks Department over mats that are supposed to provide better beach access.
"Mobi-mats" are blue mats that run from the boardwalk through the sand toward the water. The mats make it easier for the wheelchair-bound, elderly people with strollers and bikers to navigate through the sand.
The Parks Department recently spent $130,000 to install the special mats at select city beaches. However, the mats are only a temporary fix to a bigger problem. Money is currently allocated to the department to build a permanent structure.
City officials have said they?ve been awaiting approval from the state to proceed.
In the meantime, Brighton Beach residents want to know why their beach only has one blue mat.
The Parks Department did not want to comment to News 12 Brooklyn; neither did Community Board 13.
