A tanker carrying 556,000 barrels of diesel oil ran aground Thursday morning off Coney Island.

No oil spill or injuries were reported. Coast Guard officials said something went wrong with the steering system on the White Sea ship, causing it to turn off course and run into the sandy bottom of a channel.

The Coast Guard set up a security zone around the vessel, which ran aground between Coney Island and Sandy Hook National Park in New Jersey. The ship is expected to be nudged off the sand Friday during high tide around 8 p.m.

Divers plan to check the hull to make sure it is not damaged. The vessel will be inspected before it is allowed to leave, the Coast Guard said.

The tanker is operated by Singapore-based Tanker Pacific Management.
