Study finds BK girls getting shortchanged in high school sports

A new study finds that Brooklyn girls are getting shortchanged when it comes to high school sports.
A report put together by Public Advocate Betsy Gotbaum found there are more boys? teams than girls? teams in the Public School Athletic League (PSAL). The report also shows that the PSAL schedule discriminated against girls fencing, soccer, golf and swim teams. Those sports were scheduled in the ?off-season? when fewer college recruiters are around. According to the report, the boys? teams in the same sports compete during the regular season.
Gotbaum is recommending the PSAL, Department of Education and school officials work to create new girls? teams wherever possible. According to Gotbaum, studies have shown that girls who participate in sports are less likely to do drugs, get pregnant and smoke cigarettes.
