City OKs Webb Ave. apartment construction, tenants still forced out
The Department of Buildings has approved a construction project at a Webb Avenue apartment complex after all the tenants were evacuated due to a lack of fire escapes.
The building at 2400 Webb Ave. was evacuated after the management company took down all the building fire escapes to remodel the building's facade without any permits.
The city has now issued a permit for construction allowing the company to remove only six fire escapes during construction.
Officials say tenants will not be allowed to return home until after enough fire escapes have been reinstalled and the building is inspected.
Until then, tenants will receive housing vouchers for $840 per week.
Councilman Fernando Cabrera is organizing a meeting for next Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at the New Life International Outreach on Morris Avenue for tenants and city agencies alike.
