Bloomberg: Sugary drink ban necessary to combat obesity
Mayor Michael Bloomberg is stressing the dangers of obesity in an effort to get more New Yorkers on board with his controversial plan to stop the sale of large sugary drinks and sodas.
Bloomberg and Health Commissioner Tom Farley spoke at Montefiore Hospital in The Bronx Tuesday about what they say is an epidemic in New York. The mayor says that the city sees about 7,000 obesity-related deaths each year.
Bloomberg also stressed that the proposal doesn't not take away people's rights to consume what they want, but is a simple way of showing them what a healthy portion size would be.
