17-percent taxi fare hikes take effect in NYC

Taking a yellow cab is now going to be tougher on commuter wallets as a 17-percent fare hike goes into effect.
The city's Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC) approved the increase for yellow cabs, but fares will not go up on livery cabs this year. The flat rate for a ride between Manhattan and JFK Airport will also make a jump from $45 to $52, while the price to travel to and from Newark will rise from $15 to $17.50.
Cabs that have not yet been inspected or updated their meters will still have to charge the old fare through the end of this month.
This marks the first fare increase since 2005.
